Opioid Prescribing and Pain Management - Accreditation

Target Audience:
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of those who prescribe controlled substances, particularly opioid pain medications. This includes:
- Approximately 50,000 physician hospitalists in the US
- Primary care providers, specialist providers such as surgeons, cardiologists and neurologists
- Nurse practitioners and physician assistants who prescribe controlled substances and pain medications.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
This CME activity is designed to summarize and review current guidelines and share best practices in opioid prescribing to reduce the inherent risk involved in prescribing opioids. It is critically important for clinicians to understand best practices and practice guidelines to ensure that they are offering the best care, while simultaneously decreasing patient risk and potential liability.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Identify appropriate pain management risk identification strategies for patients
- Recognize situations in which opioid prescribing is and is not appropriate
- Discuss the importance of routinely assessing pain, function, and adverse effects in patient taking chronic opioid therapy.
- Identify signs and symptoms of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder

Instructions to Receive Credit
In order to receive credit for this activity, the participant must complete a posttest, with 70% or higher, and evaluation. Certificates will be emailed to you within one week of completion of the survey. ABIM MOC Credits will be uploaded to the ACCME PARS system within 30 days of activity completion.
